Preparing for Vacation: Leaving Work at Work

There is nothing worse than FINALLY getting on vacation and not being able to stop thinking about work. With summer just around the corner, we all need a well deserved break. Be smart before taking off on your adventures and make sure you leave your work in good standing.

4 tips for leaving work at work

1.  When the countdown hits single digits, it's difficult to stay focused and keep your mind on the task at hand.  Do everything you can to fight the daydreams!  You want to enjoy your vacation, not stress about what you didn't get done. Staying focused now and wrapping up every loose end will ensure you are able to relax and make the most of your time away.

2.  Check in with your coworkers to see what they need before you go.  If you have people who rely heavily on you, make sure they know you'll be gone. Let them know to ask you any questions they have now while you're available. Sit down with your boss for a few minutes and show them how you've left your work to be managed while you're away. Asking around the office shows that you care about your job and your performance, even when you aren't physically going to be there and making yourself look good is always a plus!

3.  Check your calendar before you leave work.  With thoughts of your vacation plans taking up so much room in your brain, that big meeting or project deadline right when you get back could end up being missed. If at all possible, reschedule meetings for before you leave so you can come back to an empty schedule.  Or make sure you have your presentation 100% outlined and ready to go so all you need to do is step up and deliver when you get back.

4.  There is nothing more frustrating than waiting for a reply to an important email. Set up an auto-reply so anyone who tries to contact you knows you'll be away and when you'll be back.  Taking the few minutes to do this could save you some major headaches upon your return.  Change your voicemail as well to let those who call know you're away and when you will be able to get back to them.  Your clients, customers, and coworkers will appreciate the heads up!

Sit back, and relax

Vacation is what we work for!  We look forward to it all year.  Make the most of your vacation this summer by taking some steps before you go. Leaving work at work will help you alleviate stress and anxiety.  You'll thank yourself when you get home!
